On lake titicaca

We took a boat ride out to Uros, one of the floating islands on lake titcaca. The lake was beautiful, though a little riding on the roof of the boat was a bit cold. We were surrounded by mountains and could catch a glimpse of the andes.

Here's alex standing on a floating island. The islanders built the island by assembling together hatches of bamboo-like plants that grow in the lake. They also make their boats out of the same stuff, though they are incorporating new buoyancy technology in their newer models! (empty plastic coke bottles, seriously!) Kids gather the bottles and apparently they significantly help the Uros people build boats that last longer.
